Big Benefits from Moodle 2.5 with 'Essential' theme

The recently released Moodle 2.5 coupled with a new 'theme' called Essential provide a fantastic platform for School VLEs and are a quantum leap from the old Moodle which many saw as being old-fashioned, clunky, horrible to look at and awkward to use. So, for those procrastinators like myself, this might turn out to justify your lack of decision about a VLE for your school or organisation!

Benefits of Moodle 2.5 with the 'Essential' theme for school/organisation VLEs / Moodles

Briefly ...

  • Easier to install, update: A move towards WordPress-like functionality - Moodle steps you through many of the previously-complex processes such as managing your plugins after an upgrade
  • Easier to use in general: Lots of javascript & Ajax hide large sections of the configuration, so instead of having a 3-screen-high form to wade through, you usually see the important settings at the top, with optional settings neatly packed and hidden in sections waiting for you to click to reveal.
  • Activities and Resources: A much more intuitive way of inserting Moodle activities and resources.
and from a theme point of view ...

  • Responsive: The 'Essential' theme obviates the need for a seperate Moodle 'app' to view on smartphones, tablets etc. Moodle now resizes and re-orients the layout on the page to suit your device. Example: On a smartphone, it condenses your menu, it re-arranges your blocks to below the content and it generally makes your Moodle VLE look gorgeous on smartphones
  • Styling: Previous Moodle 'themes' required technical knowledge to change colours, insert logo, and other styling tasks. The 'Essential' theme has a comprehensive configuration screen where you can do most/all of this.

With our the Digilogue LearnSpace package, you can leapfrog ahead to get an installed, configured, styled, smartphone compatible VLE (eg Moodle but we do others as well!) with hosting and setup for a no-setup, no website design/development, monthly fee.
