How to Design eLearning - with Drama!

I attend a fair few courses and conferences. One thing I've learned about communication is encapsulated in one word - Drama!

I've seen dozens of speakers making excellent, sequential, instructionally-perfect presentations - excellent, but ultimately forgettable. Occasionally I've seen someone stand at the podium and do something dramatic - as simple as telling a short story, making an analogy, bringing some unusual prop(s), showing some dramatic images and speaking around them. This is impactful and connective drama - you are engaged, connected, alive and receptive.

Realistically, all parts of all your courses can't be thus. However, you should choose various opportunities to integrate "drama" where possible. This might be:

  • an pre-course survey, show results and have them says 'ah right, I never thought that' or 'most of us are int he same boat' etc.
  • engaging activities: give the participants some opportunity to research
  • buddy pairs: designate pairs and assign work/research (eg find the 3 best YouTube videos on Topic123)
  • forum questions: ask for opinions, eg how would you break down, or sequence the following steps
  • video: for well embedded learners, ask them to camera-record a short video: what they are hoping to get from this course
  • survey: ask participants to design a survey for peers asking 'how do you approach X' etc.

Best of luck!
