Keep your website looking good and fresh with these 2 simple tips

Two words: colors and size. Most website owners are guilty of doing those in reverse.

Sin number one: Keeping everything small

I blame word. We are so used to writing word documents that we treat the website content like one. Don't be afraid to go big! Headers, images - go big. It's a wide spread thing in web design these days.

Let's say you are about to drop an article or a new page onto your website. Header, image and couple of paragraphs. Simple stuff. Nothing a standard Wordpress or Joomla editor cannot do. Check this out:

Familiar? There's nothing wrong with it in theory. Something you will stumble upon on any news sites, etc. Looks like a word doc though.

How about this though? Cropped the image and made the headers big. Sure, it takes more space, but it pops at you!

Nothing worse than looking at a page or an article and feeling like you are about to read a manual. Big opening image and a banner will invoke a feeling for the topic and make the opening message clear.

Sin number two: messing with colors

The fist one was a do. Second one is a don't. A common wrongdoing is trying to emphasize or spice things up with additional font colors or - heavens forbid - font backgrounds.

Keeping things looking good requires consistency and sticking to color palette. Your website probably came with pre-defined colors for headers and paragraphs that work with the overall colors of the website. Don't use other colors. And stick to the pre-defined font's while we're at it.

Here's what you might have come across and how it looks like when you stick to colors - based on our own website:

One might hope I'm overdoing here. But I've seen these many times all over the "internets" ;)

Sticking to pre-defined fonts and colors will produce consistency and good design across all of your website content

Although the image on the right is not the most exciting one, comparing to the left, it is clean, consistent and easy to look at.

Just for as an example, these are Digilogue's website colors, and we are sticking to them:

Conclusion

If you are a website owner/editor, colors and fonts is exactly where you should avoid attempts to make things funky and more interesting.

Image and header sizes is something you can probably experiment with. Give it a try. Go big. Make it exciting. But try to keep it consistent across the website.

Now go and give it a try!
