Value-Added options for Video

If you go to the expense of a conference, then you should (at a fraction of the price) probably webcast it. If you are webcasting, then (at a fraction of the price), you should probably archive it!

Digilogue always advise clients to try to get more out of the events and media they already have. Alternatively, if giving a workshop (or series of), then it may not cost much to prop up a camera and record the event. Caveat - yes, it should be done correctly or not at all (try to get the lighting right, good quality camera, clear audio etc.) but this doesn't have to cost much!

So, once you have your recording of your event / presentation / conference - you have many additional 'value-added' options. Here are a few to consider:

1. Upload to Vimeo / YouTube:

Both of these platforms are free for basic usage. If you need extra features (eg password protect certain clips, enable playing off ONLY, upload > 20Gb per week, etc). Once your videos are uploaded, then all you have to do is paste the 'embed code' on your website page - and voila - your video will be presented for immediate streaming. No hassle with file types, converting, varying bitrate for different speed connections, ensuring it works on smartphones, iPads, ensuring you have enough hosting space for videos on your website etc.

2. Save to your Intranet:

Save your file as an MP4 and archive on your organisation's intranet / NAS drive - and everyone (locally) will have access and be able to review key points / speeches / presentations

3. Publish as online Learning

If the audio is pretty clear - then you can make an interactive presentation which can be published on your website, or VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), or even sent as a file. You can the audio from the video part and merge this will simple visuals (eg screenshots from the presenation - or the slides from the PowerPoint that was used) and you end up with a nice 'unit' - a 'talking powerpoint' if you like. Again, easy to develop - but can be reviewed by hundreds, integrated into your eLearning etc.

In the screenshot to the right, you can see the various features:

  • Logo at top left
  • Menu of all the slides along the side
  • Play button to listen, pause, review - across the bottom
  • Main area: this is the original PPT slide
  • Design: nice PPT slide master
  • Also plays on smartphones AND iOS devices like iPad etc. (ie NOT flash, but HTML5)

4. Podcast:

Many people love listening to audio podcasts while driving, on the train/bus etc. By extracting the audio from your video file (really easy to do!) and then cleaning it up a little (using normalisation, clean-up tools eg Izotope, perhaps adding a nice intro audio and low background music - you can make your audio available to download or publish as a podcast.

In summary - if it's worth attending/listening in the first place - then it's worth re-publishing for later!
